SYNOPSIS La Balena di Rossellini was born from one of the most beautiful dreams of Roberto Rossellini, in his path of author. The film conceived, but never realized, by Rossellini took shape in his travel notes after a trip in Chile in May 1971. This journey were undertaken to conduct a portrait-interwiev of Salvador Allende, then actually carried out by the author of Roma città aperta. It’s October 28,1971. Rossellini, back from Santiago del Chile, read the news of a beached whale on the Pacific coast, near a poor village inhabitated by fishermen. From this simple piece of news, comes out a film script for an apologue about wealth and poverty. A film whose shooting he would have commit to the young student from Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia Claudio Bondì, just graduated.
