The film Corn Island, directed by the Georgian Giorgi Ovashvili will distributed in Italy by Cineama from August 20th.
The film has been shortilisted among the best international films at Oscars 2014 and it was awarded with the Crystal Globe at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival 2014. It’s a poetic and minimalist film, telling the story of a multiple conflict: that between nature and humans, that of a young girl discovering her adolescence and, in background, the endless war between Georgia and Abkhazia.
The action in the film takes place at the natural border of the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict – the Enguri River. The spring floods create a small island in the middle of the river, where an old peasant grows corn. Later a Georgian border policeman comes to the island and changes the seemingly ideal life of the old peasant and his 16-year old granddaughter.
